A guide to professional CD replication services

Whether you are a musician in a band, a record label or even a business that needs CDs for data purposes, there will come that time when you need a large batch of CD copies made. Although you can always run a few copies off at home, when it comes to batches of hundreds or even thousands, you will be advised to use the services of one of the many CD Replication companies available. Here is a guide to how it works.

Replication versus duplication

The first thing that you will need to know is that there are two different ways to create CD copies, that is, either through replication or duplication. In the duplication process, information can be 'burned' onto blank CD-Rs from a master. Whereas in the replication process, information is added during the CD production process itself.

Replication

In the replication process, the master will have to be carefully examined for any 'data corruption' before any replication can begin. A special 'Glass Master' is then created that has to be flawless. This glass master will then be used to create what is known as a 'Stamper'. Injection moulding machine The stamper is then loaded into an injection moulding machine that will create the required number of CD replicates. Professional companies will carefully oversee the whole process to ensure that optimum quality is maintained throughout. An application of micro-thin aluminium will then be added to each 'clone' and each copy will then be lacquered for maximum protection.

Advantages and disadvantages of replication

Advantages - In the replication method, the cost will generally be significantly lower than if using the duplication type method. - Replication methods include the possibility of both offset printing and screen printing. - The majority of replication companies auto assemble the discs into sleeves or cases, keeping costs to a minimum. Disadvantages - The process of replication is much longer than for duplication. On average, the run-time will be 7 - 10 working days for replication compared to 2 - 3 working days for duplication. - For most companies, they set a minimum requirement of 1,000 copies.

How to do it

For CD replication, you will need to take your master to the company, although many allow for a simple upload of the master. You will then be required to stipulate, firstly, the disk type that you want (they will offer you a few choices here), secondly, the quantity that you require and lastly, the precise CD packaging that you require. CD packaging The choices here will include either a simple clear plastic or cardboard sleeve or a slimline or standard Jewel case that will be available in a choice of either black or clear plastic.
