What are the signs of a yeast infection?
Do you believe that you may have a yeast infection? This type of infection is relatively common and not a serious threat to health. Find out how to recognise the signs of a yeast infection.
Candidiasis
Exactly, what is a yeast infection? What is it caused by? A yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of the single-celled fungus, candida albicans, which is found in the genital area as well as the intestinal tract. Yeast infections are also known as candida infections. They are not necessarily dangerous, but they can be very uncomfortable. Having regular yeast infections may be a sign of a health problem or imbalance, or that the immune system is weak.
How do you get a yeast infection?
When the ecology of the genital area changes, the candida fungus may flourish. Factors such as the use of oral contraceptives, pregnancy, a
high-sugar, high-carbohydrate diet, and tight clothing can be potential causes of a yeast infection. A weakened immune system and the overuse of antibiotics can also cause this type of infection. It is also possible to get an infection during sexual intercourse, either directly form your partner, male or female, or even as a reaction to the lubricant on the condom used.
Signs and symptoms
It is important to be able to recognise the signs of a yeast infection so that you can treat it right away. Furthermore, if you are experiencing other symptoms, be sure to see your doctor. Some of the signs of an infection may indicate another health problem. Female yeast infection A female yeast infection is characterised by soreness, a white, odourless vaginal discharge, burning and swelling around the vagina. There may also be pain during sex and urination. Women may experience a yeast infection rash. Male yeast infection Men can get yeast infections as well, although there are usually no symptoms. Possible signs include itching and redness and even white discharge.
Treating your infection
If you are unsure if you have a yeast infection or if this is the first infection, be sure to see your doctor. There are many ways to treat candida infections, from a healthy diet to anti-fungal medications. Simply eating lots of yoghurt and avoiding sugars and white flour products can help prevent recurring infections for some people. If you have repeated infections or if there are other symptoms, such as a foul odour, definitely make a doctor's appointment.
