What not to keep in storage baskets
Storage baskets are popular since they are lightweight, portable and allow ventilation. However, storage baskets are not the right choice for all applications. Learn about which items should be avoided when using storage baskets to ensure both the upkeep of your basket as well as to choose appropriate storage for your requirements. Read further on what items should not be kept in storage baskets.
Air tight goods
Storage baskets allow ventilation since they include air spaces within their bodies. This means that goods which require air tight conditions to retain their freshness will get spoiled when placed in storage baskets. Opened bags of food are likely to be tainted, and they are also prone to common household pests which can enter through the basket body. Items like home fragrance supplies require air tight environment in order to preserve their scents. If aromatic herbs and spices are placed in storage baskets, they can leave a trail of odour in the basket body which may then be transferred to other items stored in the basket. Plastic boxes are ideal for such storage.
Item size
Small items Since storage baskets have a woven structure, there is always the risk of such items falling through the material or getting stuck within the weave. Even wicker baskets with a fairly tight weave are not ideal for small items like pins, buttons or earrings and accessories. One way to mitigate this limitation is to add a cloth lining to the baskets. Bulky goods Since storage baskets do not have solid faces and function more like a framework, they cannot withstand overloading or bulky storage. If large or heavy items are forced into storage baskets or boxes with lids, the basket can easily give way. Wicker baskets and wire racks are both fairly brittle and can break. Once breakage starts, it is difficult to contain the damage, and the storage basket will have to be thrown away.
Stains
It is difficult to clean wicker baskets if they are to become stained since they absorb the stains. Metal wire baskets are comparatively easier to clean. Items which can cause liquids to leak, or leave behind a residue of oil or grease should be avoided. You also need to keep in mind that even some make-up items or ink pens can cause leakage in hot conditions.
Access
If storage needs not to be portable, wire shelving and wire racking are preferable since they allow easier access. Shoe rack shelving or box shelving for assorted goods allow more capacity and better display. When choosing items to be stored in baskets, ensure that they are proportionate to the basket material, strength and size of weave.
