How to make pancakes?

Pancakes are one of the world's oldest dishes and have been cooked for centuries. A simple batter is made from eggs, flour and milk before being heated in a pan and flipped. Pancakes are great fun as they can be customised to your exact taste by adding all kinds of wonderful toppings! We'll show you a simple recipe that will make the perfect pancake every time.

What You'll need

This easy pancake recipe makes enough pancakes for four people. Ingredients
2 eggs
50 g butter
200 ml milk
100 g flour
75 ml water Equipment
Whisk
Non stick frying pan
Mixing bowl
Measuring jug
Pan Slice

Sift the flour

Start by sieving the flour into a mixing bowl. Do this from a height to incorporate lots of air. Hint The best pancakes are light and airy and this method of sieving the flour ensures that you do not end up with a stodgy end product.

Mix in the eggs

Make a well in the center of the flour and crack in two eggs. Mix the eggs and flour together with the whisk.

Add the milk and water

This is where we start to make the pancake batter. In a measuring jug, mix together milk and water. Pour a little of this mixture into the bowl and start to whisk. Keep on adding the liquid to the eggs and flour, whisking as you go. Keep on adding the liquid until the pancake batter is of the same consistency as cream. The longer you whisk, the smoother the batter will be. If it becomes too runny add a little flour and if it becomes too thick, add a little more milk. You will get a feel for what works best.

Heat a pan

Heat a good nonstick frying pan and grease the bottom with a little butter. Do not add all the butter at once! Start with a high heat and reduce to medium before you add the first part of the batter.

Add the pancake batter

For a medium frying pan, add about 3 tablespoons of the batter in the centre of the pan. As soon as you do this, rotate the pan to get an even coating of batter. Cook for about thirty seconds and flip with a pan slice. The other side will need another ten seconds before serving. Repeat for each pancake. Once you have learned how to make pancakes yourself, you will never go back to store bought pancake mixes. This basic pancake recipe is not only cheaper but also contains less preservatives and chemicals.
